Myofacial Release
What is it?
Facia is a strong connective tissue that creates a web-like casing over and threw structures in the human body to compartmentalize muscles. In many cases facia can become restricted and be released by rolling, stretching and holding the tissues as they become released.
Myofacial release techniques focus on the connective tissues, or fascia. This way of working the fascia is utilized by applying a gentle pressure to loosen the tightness in the fascia believed to cause muscle restrictions. Common complaints from clients that find relief from myofacial releases are back pain and a decrease range of motion.
Massage therapy uses strokes and kneading techniques, while myofascial release uses sustained pressure to stretch and lengthen the connective tissues.
The significant difference between massage and myofascial release is the use of lubricants. Massage treatments often use oils or lotions to prevent friction. Myofascial release uses no oils for lubrication making it easier to accurately find the restrictions and get a better hold of the fibers.
